Planning a professional event in Sarawak
Two decisions come first in Sarawak: what visiting delegates must do to enter, and which city hosts you.
Send us a short event brief

Hi, I'd like to discuss support for an upcoming event. Help needed: Not decided Event type: Not decided Event area: Sarawak Date: Not decided Approx. attendees: Not decided Reference: EV-1117 / en Page: https://eventconsultant.com.my/areas/sarawak/
The short answer
Write one Sarawak brief with two parts. The first part says what each group of visiting delegates does to enter Sarawak. The second compares host cities using what the councils and Business Events Sarawak publish.
Where the sources are silent, ask the right office.
The two decisions
Entry controls decide who can travel and what they carry. The host city decides venue, supplier and permit questions.
Settle entry first. It can change who you can invite.
What to verify for Sarawak
- What do delegates from the Peninsula need to enter Sarawak? Ask the Immigration Department and read its page on internal travel documents.
- What applies to delegates from Sabah or from overseas? Ask the Immigration Department.
- Does a visit pass allow paid speaking or exhibiting? Ask the Immigration Department before you invite anyone to work.
- Do the sources you read cover your delegates? The Sarawak government visitors-pass page is about work permits for non-citizens, so do not treat it as the rule for Malaysian delegates.
- Does your event meet Business Events Sarawak's support criteria? Ask Business Events Sarawak, which publishes criteria on event size and delegates from outside Sarawak.
- Which airport will each group use, and who operates it? Ask the airport operator and the airlines. Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd operates Kuching, Miri and Bintulu, according to the Sarawak government page.
- Which dates fall on the Sarawak weekend or a public holiday in Sarawak or a delegate's home state? Use the host-city date checker, then confirm with the host.
- Who owns the brief and updates it if a rule changes? Name one person.
How Sarawak differs from the Peninsula and Sabah
The Immigration Department's internal travel document applies to Malaysians from West Malaysia entering Sarawak as well as Sabah. It is valid for one journey and is issued at arrival-hall counters, with no payment.
The source does not say what applies to every other case. Ask the Immigration Department for each group. For the Sabah side, see Sabah.
Choosing between host cities
Use only what the published sources say. Fill the gaps with questions.
| City | What the sources say | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Kuching | Business Events Sarawak describes Borneo Convention Centre Kuching as a convention venue. Two city councils exist: Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) and Kuching South City Council (MBKS). | Which council covers the chosen site? Which permit applies? What are the hall list and reservation steps at the centre? |
| Miri | Business Events Sarawak describes convention venues as hotels. An earlier release only proposed a northern Sarawak convention centre. | Does a dedicated convention centre exist today? Ask each hotel about its meeting space. |
| Bintulu | Bintulu Development Authority is the local authority. No convention venue is confirmed in the published sources. | Which venues hold industry events? Who answers supplier questions? |
Coverage and travel
Planning and project management can be done remotely for any event in Malaysia, including Sarawak. On-site support and travel to Sarawak can be arranged when you need them, as agreed in the scope. Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Seremban are where we work most.
Travel and accommodation are charged when they are part of the agreed scope. For the wider picture, see planning across Malaysia. For city detail, see Kuching, Miri or Bintulu.
Worked example · Fictional example
A fictional association compares host cities
Fictional organisation and figures, for illustration only.
The Persatuan Fiktif Jurutera Pembinaan wants a two-day conference in Sarawak for about 200 delegates, many from the Peninsula.
Its committee first asks the Immigration Department what each group needs, then lists what the sources say for each city. Kuching leads, because a convention centre is named. The committee then asks the centre for its hall list and the councils which permit applies.

- Business Events Sarawak criteria checked (answer, date):
- Candidate cities and what each source says:
- Venue answers per city (hall list, address, reservation steps, confirmed by, date):
- Council and permit per site (confirmed with, date):
- Airport and airline options per group (confirmed with, date):
- Weekend and holiday check (tool result and host confirmation):
- Decision, owner and date:
Handle it in-house, or bring in help?
Your team can usually handle this when
- All delegates are from one place and the entry step is simple.
- You already know the host city and venue.
- One person can make the calls.
Outside planning help earns its fee when
- Delegates come from several places and nobody has asked Immigration.
- You are choosing between cities and the sources leave gaps.
- The committee is far from Sarawak and wants one person to chase answers.
Would you like someone to run these checks?
We can put the entry questions to the right offices, compare host cities with you and keep the answers in one place, or manage the event itself with the specialists it needs, within the scope we agree. Planning can be done remotely, and we can arrange on-site support and travel to Sarawak when the scope needs it. Travel and accommodation are charged when part of the agreed scope. Send your delegate groups and the cities you are considering, and we will reply with the level of support that fits and what it would cover.
Questions organisers ask
Do delegates from the Peninsula need a document to enter Sarawak?
The Immigration Department lists a document for Malaysians from West Malaysia, issued at arrival-hall counters. Ask the department what applies to your group.
Which city should host my event?
Compare what the sources say and ask each venue and council the questions in the table.
Does Business Events Sarawak support every event?
It publishes support criteria. Ask it whether your event qualifies.
Is there an office in Sarawak?
No. We plan remotely and arrange on-site support and travel as agreed in your scope.
