Miri: arrival instructions for delegates connecting by air

Some delegates change flights on the way to Miri, and each connection is a place to get lost.

The short answer

Write one route per home city. Each route says where the delegate starts, where they change, what they do at the connection, and how they reach the venue in Miri.

Build the pack with the arrival instructions builder. Ask the airline, the airport operator and the venue to confirm their own parts.

Why connections need their own instructions

A delegate on a direct flight has one arrival. A delegate who connects has two, and the second one is often the one that goes wrong: a missed flight, bags that did not follow, or a document step in the wrong place.

So the instructions must cover the connection, not only the landing in Miri.

What to verify for Miri

  • Which cities will your delegates start from, and where does each route connect? Ask the airlines and the airport for your dates.
  • Do bags go through to Miri, or must delegates collect and re-check them? Ask the airline for each route.
  • Where do Peninsular delegates collect the internal travel document if they connect through another airport? The Immigration Department says it is issued at arrival-hall counters in Sabah and Sarawak airports. Ask the department how that applies to a connecting route. See Sarawak.
  • Who operates Miri airport, and what do arriving delegates do after landing? The Sarawak government page names Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd as operator. Ask the operator for the arrival steps.
  • Where will the programme be held? Business Events Sarawak describes Miri convention venues as hotels, and an earlier release only proposed a northern Sarawak convention centre. Ask it whether a dedicated centre exists today, and ask each hotel about its meeting space in writing.
  • What are the steps from the airport to the hotel entrance, and does the hotel arrange transfers? Ask the hotel, and do not copy a time or distance from a map.
  • Do you need a permit for signage or an activity outside the venue? Ask Miri City Council. Its office is closed at weekends and on public holidays, so plan questions for working days.
  • Which dates fall on the Sarawak weekend or a public holiday in Sarawak or a delegate's home state? Use the host-city date checker, then confirm with the host.
  • Who updates the routes if a flight changes, and who do delegates call if they miss a connection? Name one person and one contact.

What is different about Miri

In a city with direct arrivals, one set of instructions can serve most delegates. For Miri, published sources describe hotel venues, so the last step usually ends at a hotel entrance. Confirm that with the venue.

For the Kuching version of the venue question, see Kuching.

How to write the routes

  1. List the home cities of your delegates.
  2. Ask the airlines how each route connects on your dates.
  3. For each route, write the first flight, the connection step, the second flight and the arrival in Miri.
  4. Add what to do about bags and documents at the connection.
  5. Add the steps from the Miri arrival hall to the venue entrance, confirmed by the venue.
  6. Write what a delegate does if a flight is late or missed, and who to call.

Coverage and travel

Planning support covers Malaysia, including Miri. Planning can be done remotely, and on-site support and travel can be arranged when the scope needs it. We work most in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Seremban.

Travel and accommodation are charged when they are part of the agreed scope. For the wider picture, see planning across Malaysia.

Worked example · Fictional example

A fictional association writes routes for Miri

Fictional organisation and figures, for illustration only.

The Persatuan Fiktif Pengurus Tenaga plans a one-day forum in Miri for about 70 delegates. They start from four home cities, and some must change flights.

The committee writes four routes. Each names the connection step, says what to do about bags, and ends with the hotel entrance as the hotel confirmed it. It adds one phone contact for missed connections.

Handle it in-house, or bring in help?

Your team can usually handle this when

  • Most delegates start from one city and fly direct.
  • The venue publishes clear arrival steps.
  • One person can keep the routes updated.

Outside planning help earns its fee when

  • Delegates start from several cities and connect on different flights.
  • Visiting speakers are unsure about documents and bags.
  • The committee is far from Miri and wants one person to hold the routes and the contacts.

Would you like someone to build the routes?

A conference project lead can collect the airline, airport and venue answers, write one route per home city and keep the comparison in one place. We can also manage the whole event and coordinate the specialists it needs, where that suits your scope. Planning can be done remotely, and on-site support and travel to Miri can be arranged when the scope needs it. Travel and accommodation are charged when part of the agreed scope. Send your home cities and the venue you are considering, and we will reply with the level of support that fits and what it would cover.

Questions organisers ask

Is there a convention centre in Miri?

Business Events Sarawak describes Miri venues as hotels, and an earlier release only proposed a centre. Ask it whether one exists today.

Do bags go through to Miri on a connecting flight?

It depends on the airline and ticket. Ask the airline for each route.

Where do delegates from the Peninsula collect the travel document?

The Immigration Department says it is issued at arrival-hall counters in Sabah and Sarawak airports. Ask how it applies to a connecting route.

Is there an office in Miri?

No. We plan remotely and arrange on-site support and travel as agreed in your scope.
