Hi, I'd like to discuss support for an upcoming event. Help needed: Not decided Event type: Not decided Event area: Alor Setar, Kedah Date: Not decided Approx. attendees: Not decided Reference: EV-1129 / en Page: https://eventconsultant.com.my/areas/kedah-perlis/alor-setar/
The short answer
Add the weekend to your venue shortlist as a column, so every venue is judged on the dates you actually need. Ask each venue which days its sales, banquet and technical teams work, and whether set-up day falls on one of them.
Confirm the state weekend with the host first. The Kedah and Perlis brief shows how.
Why the weekend belongs on the shortlist
A date can look free in a venue's calendar and still be difficult. The people you need on that day may not be working, or the day before may be a rest day when set-up must happen.
So test each venue against your full run of dates: set-up, event days and take-down.
What to verify for Alor Setar
- What are the weekly rest days in Kedah? A Public Service Department (JPA) working-hours document gives Sunday to Thursday hours for a group that includes Kedah. Confirm the weekend with the venue. Ask the Kedah state government to confirm the rest days for your event year, and record the date you asked.
- On which days does each venue work? Ask every venue which days its events, catering and technical staff are on duty, and whether set-up and take-down can happen on your dates.
- Which council covers the venue? The Kedah local authority portal lists the Alor Setar City Council (MBAS) with an address on Jalan Kolam Air. Confirm the area it covers with the council. Ask the venue for its full address, then ask MBAS or the state which council applies.
- Does your event need a permit or licence? No published source lists the requirements. Ask MBAS whether any element of your programme needs one, and ask rather than assume.
- What are the hall details? No venue page is confirmed. Ask each venue in writing for room layouts, breakout rooms, hours, loading and what is included in the quote.
- How will delegates arrive? KTMB's ETS pages name Ipoh, Butterworth and Padang Besar but not Alor Setar. Ask KTMB which services stop at stations near your venue, and ask Malaysia Airports about flights to Alor Setar on your dates.
- Which school and public holidays touch your dates? The 2026 school calendar puts Kedah in Kumpulan A, with different extra-holiday dates from Kumpulan B states. Test your dates with the host-city date checker.

On the mainland, the weekend is the main date risk
On the mainland you plan around the working week, with no ferry or sea crossing to allow for. That makes the weekend the main date risk.
If you are weighing the island, see Langkawi. For the state picture see Kedah and Perlis. For the national picture see planning across Malaysia.
Worked example · Fictional example
A fictional association tests venues against the weekend
Fictional organisation and figures, for illustration only.
Persatuan Fiktif Guru Profesional plans a one-day conference for about 150 delegates and has two venues on its shortlist. Its first date is a Friday.
After the host state confirms its rest days, the committee asks both venues which days their teams work and whether set-up can happen the day before. It moves the conference to the day that works for both the venue's team and its speakers.

Handle it in-house, or bring in help?
Your team can usually handle this when
- Your delegates are mostly from Kedah and share its working week.
- A committee member can phone the venues and the council.
- Your dates are flexible enough to move if a venue's team is off.
Outside planning help earns its fee when
- Delegates come from several states with different weekends and no one owns the date check.
- Your committee is outside Kedah and cannot meet the venues before you decide.
- You need one comparison that sets weekend, set-up days and hall details side by side.

Which venue should we choose?
No venue page is confirmed. Use the shortlist to compare the venues you find, on written answers.
