Hi, I'd like to discuss support for an upcoming event. Help needed: Not decided Event type: Not decided Event area: Kedah and Perlis Date: Not decided Approx. attendees: Not decided Reference: EV-1113 / en Page: https://eventconsultant.com.my/areas/kedah-perlis/
The short answer
Check the weekend before you fix dates. Official sources point to a Sunday to Thursday working week in Kedah, but none states the weekend in so many words, and Perlis must be checked separately.
Then decide between Langkawi and the mainland by how delegates and equipment arrive.
What to verify for Kedah and Perlis
- What is the weekly rest day in Kedah, and in Perlis? A Public Service Department (JPA) working-hours document gives Sunday to Thursday hours for a group that includes Kedah. A Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) campaign page lists its contact hours as Sunday to Thursday. Neither states the weekend. Ask the Kedah state government to confirm it, and ask the Perlis State Secretary's Office separately. The two states may differ.
- How do replacement holidays work? The Cabinet Division page says that under section 3 of the Holidays Act 1951, a holiday that falls on a state weekly holiday moves to the next day. The page does not name Kedah or Perlis. Ask each state which replacement days apply in your event year.
- Which state holidays fall on your dates? The Perlis state portal has a Hari Kelepasan Am menu, but its 2026 list is an image. Ask both states for the list for your event year, then test your dates with the host-city date checker.
- Where do your delegates live? The 2026 school calendar puts Kedah in Kumpulan A and Perlis in Kumpulan B, with different extra-holiday dates. Delegates from the two states may have different school holidays.
- How do delegates and equipment reach Langkawi? LADA's campaign page describes a Roll-on Roll-off (RoRo) ferry from Kuala Perlis to Langkawi, booked through Langkawi Port. Ask LADA and Langkawi Port for schedules, vehicle and equipment rules and terminal arrangements on your dates. Ask which local authority covers your Langkawi address.
- Which council covers a mainland address? The Kedah state office is in Alor Setar, and the Kedah local authority portal lists the Alor Setar City Council (MBAS) with an address on Jalan Kolam Air. Confirm the area it covers with the council. Ask the venue for its full address, then ask MBAS or the state which council applies.
- Can delegates come by rail? KTMB's ETS page lists Padang Besar as a key station, and its maps show a Butterworth to Padang Besar route. Alor Setar is not named on those pages. Ask KTMB which stations serve your venue.
- What help is available for business events? No convention bureau or business-events office was confirmed for Kedah or Perlis. Ask the Kedah State Secretariat and Kedah Tourism whether one exists, and ask about state-run venues.

Two things set this region apart
Two things set this region apart. The weekend may not match the Saturday and Sunday weekend of other states, and Langkawi adds a crossing to every arrival plan.
For an island arrival plan see Langkawi. For a mainland venue shortlist with the weekend built in see Alor Setar. For the national picture see planning across Malaysia.
Worked example · Fictional example
A fictional association checks the weekend before choosing dates
Fictional organisation and figures, for illustration only.
Persatuan Fiktif Pendidik Profesional plans a two-day event for about 120 delegates. Its first draft opens on a Friday.
Before booking, the committee asks the host to confirm the weekly rest days. The host confirms that Friday is a rest day for its staff, so the committee moves the opening to a Sunday and asks its Langkawi shortlist for ferry rules in writing.

Handle it in-house, or bring in help?
Your team can usually handle this when
- Your delegates are mostly from the host state and share its working week.
- The venue is chosen and its arrival and loading rules are clear in writing.
- A committee member can confirm the weekend and make the calls.
Outside planning help earns its fee when
- Delegates come from several states with different weekends and nobody owns the date check.
- You are weighing Langkawi against the mainland and need one comparison, including equipment.
- Your committee is outside Kedah and Perlis and cannot visit before the event.
Want someone to run the date check and comparison with you?
We can confirm the weekend with each state, compare the island and mainland options and keep the arrival plan in one place, or manage the event itself with the specialists it needs, within the scope we agree. Planning can be done remotely, and we can arrange on-site support and travel to Kedah or Perlis when the scope needs it. Travel and accommodation are charged when part of the agreed scope. Send your dates, venue and what is still open, and we will reply with the level of support that fits and what it would cover.
